where we are
Our present educational wing used for classrooms and fellowship was constructed in three phases over 50 years ago. When we refer to the "educational wing," we are referring to the portion of the building from the back baptistry wall to the rear parking lot.
This includes a Main Level where our children are educated and a Lower Level that houses a room for fellowship and children’s worship, as well as rooms for our teenage youth.
Our building does not sit empty during the week. In addition to family use, we are fortunate to regularly host numerous community groups, such as, Alcoholics Anonymous, Classical Conversations, Christian Vocal Choir, Iglesia, FriendSpeak, Seven Parks Neighborhood Association, and Picadome Elementary School.
In addition to the above-mentioned repairs, the building simply does not adequately meet the current needs of our family. Eighty percent of our Sunday worship attendees come to our Bible classes. Southside's attendance is trending younger due to a successful children's ministry, being close to UK's campus, and having older members leave to live closer to their children and grandchildren. The educational wing is serving our children, youth, and adults and hallways are jammed. There is not good flow within the building because we are crowded. The layout is hard to navigate. Too many areas double as classrooms and traffic areas. There are only two sets of restrooms, which is inadequate for a group our size. There is nowhere for children to have their own restrooms separate from adults.
We have no check-in point for children, which poses security issues. We have no single main entrance; people flow into the building from three "main" entrances. This poses security problems, as well as difficulty properly greeting visitors and directing them and their children to the appropriate locations. The building needs to feel safe and really be safe.
We need to maximize the efficiency of our existing space. That space should be able to serve dual purposes. We do not have the luxury of a sprawling church building due to land constraints. Southside is set up around a family model; families come to church together. This means space must be flexibly used for many functions. We have a need to build for the future and not be limited by our facilities in our opportunities to serve.
